Obama Speech August 31
US NEWS:Obama Speech August 31:President Obama welcomed his predecessor George Bush in his speech at the end of hostilities in Iraq on Tuesday night, saying that while “he and I disagree about the war from the beginning”, “no one doubted the support of President Bush for our troops, or his love for his country and commitment to our security. ”
“As I have said, were patriots who supported this war, and patriots who are against it,” he said. “And we are united in their appreciation for our servicemen and women, and our hopes for the future of Iraq.”
This does not mean that Mr. Obama cast the war in a positive light. In another reference to Mr. Bush, he noted that the former president, which he harshly criticized for starting the war, he in 2002 called “dumb”, announced the beginning of hostilities in Iraq with the same desk of the Oval Office, where he uttered his observations.
“Much has changed since that night, he said.” War to disarm the state has become to fight with the rebels. Terrorism and religious war threatened to tear Iraq apart. Thousands of Americans lost their lives, tens of thousands were injured. Our relations abroad were strained. Our unity was tested at home.
Before the speech, Mr. Obama called on Bush to mark the end of hostilities, and neither the White House nor the Bush camp will reveal that the two men discussed. Denis Mc Donough, chief of staff of the National Security Council Obama, will say only that the president believes “it is important to reach out to President Bush.”
